# Direct Debit hit a record 5 billion payments in 2025

![Bacs Direct Debit volumes and unpaid items, 2022 to 2025.](https://interbacs.com/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/large_How_does_the_BACS_payment_system_work_2cd11512ad.jpeg)

Bacs processed 5.03 billion Direct Debits in 2025, the most in the scheme's history, according to [Pay.UK's 2025 processing statistics](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Bacs_Annual-processing_stats_2025.pdf). Unpaid Direct Debits grew faster: 134.9 million collections came back unpaid, up 7.7% on 2024. Direct Debit volume as a whole grew by 1.8%.

The record is real and worth reporting. The detail underneath it is more useful to a business that collects, because it shows where the pressure is building, and it has been building for several years. This article covers what the figures say, what they do not say, and what a service user can do with them.

## What did Bacs process in 2025?

Bacs processed 6.86 billion payments in 2025: 5.03 billion Direct Debits and 1.83 billion Direct Credits. Pay.UK's 2025 Annual Report rounds this to "6.9 billion transactions", "breaking all previous annual records".

By value, £1.5 trillion was collected by Direct Debit and £4.5 trillion was paid by Direct Credit, against £1.49 trillion and £4.35 trillion in 2024. Average uptime across Bacs and the Faster Payment System was 99.9%, the same as in 2024.

| | 2024 | 2025 | Change |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Direct Debits | 4,939.8m | 5,029.5m | +1.8% |
| Unpaid Direct Debits | 125.3m | 134.9m | +7.7% |
| Unpaid as a share of Direct Debits | 2.54% | 2.68% | +0.15 points |
| Direct Credits | 1,871.5m | 1,834.9m | −2.0% |
| Total Bacs volume | 6,811.3m | 6,864.4m | +0.8% |
| Direct Debit value | £1.49tn | £1.5tn | |
| Direct Credit value | £4.35tn | £4.5tn | |

Volumes are from Pay.UK's 2024 and 2025 annual processing statistics. Values are from its [2025 Annual Report](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2025-Pay.UK-Annual-Report-and-Financial-Statements.pdf), which rounds them. The changes and shares are our calculations.

How fast are unpaid Direct Debits growing?

Unpaid Direct Debits rose by 9.7 million in a year, from 125.3 million to 134.9 million, an increase of 7.7%. Direct Debit volume grew by 1.8%, so failures grew a little over four times as fast as collections.

As a share of all Direct Debits processed, unpaid items rose from 2.54% in 2024 to 2.68% in 2025. That is roughly one Direct Debit in 39 coming back unpaid in 2024, and one in 37 in 2025.

A rise of 0.15 percentage points sounds small. But of the 9.7 million extra failed payments, about 7.4 million come from the higher failure rate rather than from higher volume.
A note on the measure. Pay.UK's Direct Debit total includes the unpaid items themselves, as one of its categories, along with a small number of "contra" records. Measured against collections alone, the 2025 unpaid rate is 2.76%, and failures grew four and a half times as fast as collections. The direction and the scale of the story are the same either way.

## Is the rise a one-year blip?

No. Pay.UK publishes the figures for every year. Over the last four years, unpaid Direct Debits rose by 37% while Direct Debit volume rose by 6.7%.

| | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Direct Debits | 4,711.7m | 4,827.3m | 4,939.8m | 5,029.5m |
| Unpaid Direct Debits | 98.2m | 114.6m | 125.3m | 134.9m |
| Unpaid as a share of Direct Debits | 2.08% | 2.37% | 2.54% | 2.68% |
| Roughly one unpaid in every | 48 | 42 | 39 | 37 |
| Growth in unpaid items on the year | | +16.8% | +9.3% | +7.7% |

Source: [Pay.UK annual processing statistics, 2022 to 2025](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/payment-systems/bacs-payment-system/bacs-payment-system-statistics/). The shares and growth rates are our calculations.

There are two honest readings of the last row. The annual increase has slowed each year since 2023, so the rise is not accelerating on a full-year basis. But it has not stopped either, and it may be picking up again. [Pay.UK's quarterly report](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Quarterly-Statistical-Report-2025-Q4.pdf) for the last three months of 2025 lists unpaid debits among the fastest-growing categories, up 9.7% on a year earlier. What the data supports is a persistent rise, not a spike.

Why are more Direct Debits failing?

The figures do not say. Pay.UK's annual statistics count unpaid Direct Debits but do not break them down by reason code, so there is no published measure of how many failed for lack of funds, a cancelled instruction or anything else.

- Known: the number of unpaid Direct Debits, and that it has risen faster than Direct Debit volume in each of the last three years.
- Plausible, not measured: pressure on household budgets would push up failures for lack of funds. Account switching is rising too: the Current Account Switch Service completed 608,528 switches in the first half of 2026, up 39% on a year earlier. That is a 2026 figure, though, and the service moves Direct Debits across automatically. It is context rather than a cause.
- Not known: the mix of reasons behind the rise, or whether it is concentrated in particular types of collection.

You may see other Direct Debit failure rates quoted. The figures here are Pay.UK's published scheme totals, linked so they can be checked.

Any business can answer the question for its own collections, because every unpaid Direct Debit comes back with a reason code. The national cause is unmeasured. Yours is not.

## Which kinds of Direct Debit grew, and which fell?

Collections between businesses grew fastest. Business-to-business Direct Debits rose 7.8%, from 126.5 million to 136.3 million, and business rates collected by Direct Debit rose 14.9%.

Household collections grew slowly. Utilities and household bills rose 0.7%, with mobile phone bills up 0.9% and domestic fuel up 2.1%. Subscriptions rose 1.6%. Some categories fell: insurance premiums by 0.8%, general insurance by 2.3% and retail purchases by 5.0%.

Read the category figures with one caution. Collections Pay.UK records as "unspecified" rose by 18.4%, so some of the movement between categories may reflect how items are classified rather than how people pay.

## What happened to Direct Credits?

Direct Credit volume fell 2.0%, from 1.87 billion to 1.83 billion. Pay.UK's Annual Report says the decline was "driven in the main by rationalisation of government benefits, including the move to Universal Credit". Its category tables show employment-related payments, mainly payroll and occupational pensions, falling from 512.2 million to 463.6 million.

## Do consumers and businesses still trust Direct Debit?

Yes, by a wide margin. [Pay.UK's Market perceptions of Direct Debit report](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Market-perceptions-of-Direct-Debit-v1.0.pdf), published in July 2026 with research by Juniper Research, found that:

- 98% of consumers are aware of Direct Debit, and 92% are satisfied with it.
- 51% of satisfied consumers cite the Direct Debit Guarantee as important.
- 80% of merchants say the Guarantee makes them more likely to accept Direct Debit.

The same research shows where failed payments bite:

- Merchants that do not offer Direct Debit give concerns about payments failing for insufficient funds as one of their reasons.
- 21% of banks and fintechs name high payment failure levels as a pain point.

Failure is not undermining trust in the scheme. It is the cost that puts some businesses off using it.

The outlook is steady rather than dramatic. [UK Finance's Payment Markets 2026 report](https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/system/files/2026-08/PaymentMarketsReport_2026Summary.pdf) forecasts slow and stable growth in Direct Debit, to around 5.4 billion payments a year by 2035.

## What do the figures mean for a business that collects?

They mean more failed collections, in absolute terms, for most businesses that collect at scale. A failed Direct Debit costs more than its processing fee: the delay to cash, the time spent contacting the payer, the cost of collecting again, and the chance the money is never recovered.

- Read every report. Each unpaid Direct Debit comes back on the [ARUDD report](https://interbacs.com/blog/what-is-arudd-all-your-questions-about-arudd-answered) with a reason code. The code tells you whether to re-present, contact the payer or stop collecting.
- Act quickly. The sooner a failure is picked up, the sooner the payer can be contacted and, where the reason allows, the collection tried again.
- Verify before the first collection. [Identity verification](https://interbacs.com/bacs-software/interpass) at sign-up checks that the payer is who they say they are and that the account belongs to them.
- Let AUDDIS catch errors early. Under [AUDDIS](https://interbacs.com/blog/what-is-auddis), the payer's bank reports an instruction it cannot apply within five working days of lodging, not at the first collection.
- Manage failures as a process. [Direct Debit Management Software](https://interbacs.com/bacs-software/ddms) tracks failures, raises alerts and reports on trends, so patterns show up before they become a cash-flow problem.

All of this needs someone to do it, which brings back the question every Bacs decision turns on. Does your business have the internal resource to run Bacs submissions and act on what comes back? If yes, [Bacs approved software](https://interbacs.com/bacs-software/interpay) gives you control of the reports and the response. If not, a [Bacs approved bureau](https://interbacs.com/services/bacs-approved-bureau) submits under your own Service User Number and handles the operational work. Both routes need your own SUN.

## What should you do about it?

- Work out your own unpaid rate for 2025 and compare it with the national 2.68%, bearing in mind that it varies with what you collect and from whom.
- Look at the same rate for 2023 and 2024, to see whether you are following the national trend or moving away from it.
- Break your unpaid Direct Debits down by ARUDD reason code for the last twelve months.
- Check how long it takes, on average, between an unpaid item arriving and someone acting on it.
- Confirm that new payers are verified before their first collection, not after it fails.
