Payment Solutions Built Around Your Industry

Councils, housing providers, insurers, clubs and subscription businesses all collect by Direct Debit, but not in the same way. Here is how each sector collects, and which Interbacs route usually fits.

ONE SCHEME, DIFFERENT NEEDS

Does your sector need something different?

The Bacs rules are the same for everyone. What changes from sector to sector is the rhythm of collection, the size of the payer base, how often amounts change, and what happens when a payment fails. A council collects council tax on a fixed cycle. A gym takes a new member's first payment the day they join. An insurer has to act on a missed premium before cover is affected.

Whatever the sector, the first question is the same: do you have the internal resource to run Bacs submissions? If you do, Bacs approved software puts you in control. If not, our Bacs approved bureau submits for you, under your own Service User Number.

Cost matters in every sector too. Depending on their previous provider and agreement, some customers have cut their Direct Debit costs by more than 50% by moving to Interbacs.

PUBLIC SECTOR & NON-PROFIT

How do councils, public bodies and charities collect with Interbacs?

Councils, NHS bodies, schools and academies, charities and hospices. Their collections are high-volume and run on fixed cycles: council tax, for example, is usually split into 10 monthly payments, or 12 on request. Every payment has to stand up to audit, and every supplier has to pass procurement.

What usually fits

  • Large finance teams run InterPay themselves, often with a Hardware Security Module for unattended submission on collection days.
  • Charities and smaller bodies often prefer our bureau, with a branded online sign-up and InterPass checking every new payer.
  • Buy through G-Cloud 15 (Lot 2b, software as a service) without a full tender. Education pricing is available.
  • ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified, Cyber Essentials Plus, and registered with the ICO.

HOUSING & UTILITIES

How do housing and utility providers collect with Interbacs?

Housing associations, landlords, and energy and water providers. Rent is often charged weekly while many tenants are paid monthly, including those on Universal Credit, so collection dates have to fit the payer. Utility amounts change through the year, and every change needs advance notice to the payer before it is collected.

What usually fits

  • Direct Debit Management Software to run weekly, monthly or custom schedules, with alerts for advance notice and changing amounts.
  • Failed payments tracked from the returned Bacs report through to resolution, so arrears are picked up early.
  • InterPay or our bureau for submission, depending on the size of your team.

FINANCIAL SERVICES & INSURANCE

How do insurers and finance providers collect with Interbacs?

Insurers, brokers, lenders and finance providers. Most collections are monthly premiums or repayments, and a missed payment can mean a policy at risk of lapsing or an account falling into arrears, so unpaid items need acting on quickly. Firms also need a clear audit trail for their own regulatory obligations.

What usually fits

  • InterPay, with a Hardware Security Module for high-volume, automated submission and role-based approval.
  • DDMS reporting on every collection and failure, so unpaid premiums are chased the day they come back.
  • InterPass verifying identity and account ownership at sign-up, to reduce fraud.

HEALTHCARE

How do healthcare providers collect with Interbacs?

Private healthcare and dental plan providers, clinics and care providers. Collections are usually monthly plan payments or fees, often run by small administrative teams who also handle patient-facing work. The payer data involved is sensitive, so how it is stored and processed matters as much as the collection itself.

What usually fits

  • Our Bacs approved bureau, so a small team doesn't have to run Bacs submissions as well as everything else.
  • A branded online sign-up with InterPass verification, so new patients or members can set up a Direct Debit without paper forms.
  • ISO 27001 certified information security, and registered with the ICO.

SPORT & LEISURE

How do clubs and leisure operators collect with Interbacs?

Football and golf clubs, gyms, leisure centres, associations and event organisers. Collections are memberships, paid monthly or as an annual fee split into instalments, plus club lotteries and season tickets. Sign-ups and renewals arrive in waves at the start of a season, and many clubs are run by a small team or volunteers.

What usually fits

  • A branded online Direct Debit sign-up, with InterPass checking each new member at the point they join.
  • DDMS to manage membership changes, freezes and renewals without paperwork.
  • Our bureau for volunteer-run clubs, or InterPay for operators with their own finance team.

BROADBAND, TELECOMS & SUBSCRIPTIONS

How do subscription businesses collect with Interbacs?

Broadband and telecoms providers, home services plans and other subscription businesses. Collections are monthly, at high volume, with customers joining, upgrading and leaving every day. Amounts change when packages change, and each change needs advance notice before it is collected.

What usually fits

  • InterPay integrated with your billing system, with a Hardware Security Module so files are signed and submitted without anyone at a smart card.
  • DDMS to handle mandate changes, cancellations and failed payments at volume.
  • InterPass at sign-up, so fewer collections fail in the first place.
